As questions of terminology have been persistent from the outset, these will be explored anew in this workshop, on the basis of our research findings. In an effort to be more precise in our terminology, we will consider theoretical and methodological concepts from a plural history of religion. Historical contributions on early modern amulet culture and on typologies of the history of tradition in German-language early medieval literature will also be included in this discourse.
Aspects of the power of writing and inscription, and the attribution of identity through writing, will allow conclusions to be drawn about the context in which objects were used. This will also be considered via the example of German-language medical manuscripts and scholarly magical texts on Agrippa von Nettersheim’s concept of magic.
